A solo shelter is a different problem from a two-person tent. Here is how a one-person backpacking tent is chosen.

One Person Backpacking Tent Guide

A one-person backpacking tent is its own category: the solo backpacker wants the least weight and volume that still shelters one person and their kit, and the design follows that constraint. This guide covers the sizing, the weight and the solo-shelter options. For the full shelter category, see our camping shelters guide.

The Solo Shelter Problem

A solo camper needs less floor and less headroom than a couple, but they carry the whole shelter alone — so weight and pack volume matter more per person than in any other shelter. The one-person tent solves it by shrinking the footprint, cutting the poles and trimming the features to what one person uses. The trade is living space: a solo tent is tight, and the gear lives in a small vestibule.

Our camouflage single person tent and solo tactical refuge tent show the solo builds.

Sizing and Headroom

The key numbers are the floor area and the peak height. A one-person backpacking tent is typically about 1.5-2 square metres of floor and a peak of 90-100 cm — enough to sit up and to sleep with a pack in the vestibule. Below that it becomes a bivy; above it you are paying weight for space one person does not need.

The buyer's check is the packed size and the headroom: a solo camper will accept a small tent but not one they cannot sit up in. Our single person mosquito-proof tent shows a ventilated solo build.

Weight and Pack Size

For the solo camper, weight is the whole game — it is one person carrying the whole shelter. A one-person tent runs from about 1 kg (a light double-wall) to under 700 g (a single-wall or tarp-bivy), and the packed size decides whether it fits the pack alongside everything else. The last few hundred grams matter more here than in any other shelter choice.

For where that weight comes off, see our ultralight tent guide.

Solo Options: Tent, Bivy, Tarp and Hammock

The solo camper has more shelter options than any other. A one-person tent gives the most protection and living space. A bivy (bag or hooped) is the lightest and lowest-profile, a shelter for the minimal camper. A tarp is the most versatile and lightest by weight. A hammock suits terrain with trees. Each suits a different trip, and a solo backpacker often owns two.

For the general choice between tent and tarp, see our backpacking tent guide; for hammocks, our camping hammock guide.

Vestibule and Gear Storage

A solo tent's livable space is measured by its vestibule as much as its floor.

The vestibule is where the pack, the boots and the wet gear live — outside the sleeping area but under the fly. A solo tent with a usable vestibule keeps the pack dry and the floor clear; one without forces the gear inside or under the tent. Buyers should check the vestibule area and the door position on the sample, because for a solo camper the vestibule is often the difference between a tidy camp and a cramped one.

Sourcing Solo Tents Wholesale

One-person tents are a steady, high-reorder category with clear backpacker demand and a wide price range from entry to premium. The margin sits in the light and single-wall builds. The QC points are the pole set, the fabric and coating, the seam taping and the packed weight, all sample-verifiable. Factory-direct MOQ is typically 200-500 pieces per model, with OEM/ODM through our tents and tarps range.

FAQ

What size is a one-person backpacking tent?

Typically about 1.5-2 square metres of floor and 90-100 cm peak height — enough to sit up and sleep with a pack in a small vestibule. Below that it becomes a bivy; above it costs weight for unused space.

How much does a one-person tent weigh?

From about 1 kg (a light double-wall) to under 700 g (a single-wall or tarp-bivy). For a solo camper carrying the whole shelter, weight and pack size matter more than in any other tent choice.

Is a bivy better than a one-person tent?

A bivy is lighter and lower-profile but offers less space and ventilation; a one-person tent gives more protection and living space at a weight cost. A bivy suits the minimal camper and emergency use; a tent suits the regular backpacker.

What is the best solo shelter?

It depends on the trip: a one-person tent for protection and space, a bivy for minimal weight, a tarp for versatility, a hammock for tree-covered terrain. Many solo backpackers own two.

What is the MOQ for wholesale one-person tents?

Factory-direct MOQ is typically 200-500 pieces per model, higher for custom builds or branding. Samples take 7-10 days.
