A rain jacket is a set of numbers behind a fabric. Here is how to read them before you buy or stock.

Rain Jacket Guide: Waterproofing, Breathability and Hood

A rain jacket looks like a single piece of fabric; it is really a set of specifications. Waterproofing, breathability, seams, hood and packability decide whether it keeps the wearer dry — and whether it sells. This guide runs the specs in order. For the full clothing system, see our camp clothing and layering guide.

Waterproofing: The Hydrostatic Head

The waterproofing spec is the hydrostatic head — the height of a water column the fabric resists, in millimetres. A 5,000 mm rating handles sustained rain; 10,000 mm is the serious standard for hiking and wet climates; 20,000 mm is expedition territory. Below about 1,500 mm the fabric is water-resistant, not waterproof — it sheds a shower then wets out.

The buyer's first check is the number. "Waterproof" without a hydrostatic head is a marketing word; the honest jacket states the millimetres. Our lightweight waterproof hooded rain jacket shows the packable waterproof build.

Breathability

A waterproof jacket that does not breathe traps sweat inside — the wearer gets wet from the inside. Breathability is rated either as RET (lower is better) or MVTR (higher is better, in g/m²/24h), and the two tiers are the coated fabrics (PU, the budget range) and the membranes (PTFE or TPU, the breathable range).

A cheaper jacket compensates with venting — pit zips, a mesh lining — which is why vents matter on a value jacket. The buyer should check both the breathability rating and the venting on the sample.

Seams, Zip and Hood

Waterproof fabric is only half the jacket. The seams must be taped — an untaped sealed seam is a leak. The zip should be a water-resistant or storm-flap zip. The hood should adjust at the face and the volume, and ideally roll away. These three details separate a jacket that keeps the rain out from one that leaks at the shoulders.

Our waterproof camo M65 field jacket shows a fully-featured field shell with taped seams and a storm flap — the details worth checking on any sample.

Packability and Weight

For a jacket carried in a pack, packability competes with durability. A lighter face fabric packs smaller but wears faster; a heavier fabric is tougher but bulkier. The coat you carry is the coat that works, so for hiking and backpacking the pack size can matter more than the last 10,000 mm of hydrostatic head.

Our windproof softshell tactical jacket shows the middle ground — a softshell that packs reasonably and handles wind and light rain, worn as a mid or an outer layer.

Rain Pants and the Full System

A rain jacket handles the top half; a full rain system adds rain pants for the legs and sometimes a pack cover. The layering system underneath matters too — a base layer to move sweat and a mid layer for warmth. The jacket is the anchor, but it sells best as part of a system, which is why we cover the layers together in our camp clothing guide.

For the wider rain-gear picture, our best rain gear for hiking guide covers the full kit. For cold-weather layering, see our layering guide.

Sourcing Rain Jackets Wholesale

Rain jackets are a seasonal, high-reorder wholesale category and the anchor of a clothing range. The margin sits in the membrane (breathable) tiers while coated jackets carry volume. The QC points are the hydrostatic head, the seam taping, the breathability, the zip and hood, all sample-verifiable. Factory-direct MOQ is typically 200-500 pieces per model, with OEM/ODM through our jackets range.

FAQ

What hydrostatic head should a rain jacket have?

5,000 mm handles sustained rain; 10,000 mm+ is the serious standard for hiking and wet climates; 20,000 mm is expedition level. Below 1,500 mm the fabric is water-resistant, not waterproof.

What is the difference between waterproof and water-resistant?

Water-resistant fabric (DWR-treated) sheds light rain but wets out in sustained rain; waterproof fabric has a coating or membrane that blocks liquid water at a rated pressure. A rain jacket should be waterproof — check the hydrostatic head.

Do rain jacket seams need to be taped?

Yes — a sealed seam that is not taped is a leak point. Fully taped seams are the standard for a waterproof jacket, and one of the first things to verify on a sample.

What is a packable rain jacket?

A rain jacket light enough and small enough to carry in a pack, trading some durability for packability. For hiking and backpacking, pack size can matter more than the last increments of waterproofing.

What is the MOQ for wholesale rain jackets?

Factory-direct MOQ is typically 200-500 pieces per model for stock designs, higher for custom fabrics or branding. Samples take 7-10 days.
