How the Seal Works

Each fold creates a layer of the waterproof fabric pressed against the next; water trying to enter must climb the folded channel against gravity and work between compressed layers. The three-fold standard exists because three folds reliably block the water column that two folds can fail on. The clip holds the fold in place — the buckle or clip tension sets the compression. The practical limit is the water line: a submerged roll top can still take water over the fold, which is why the wet-environment rule is keeping the fold above the water.

What to Check

The roll top check covers the whole waterproofing system. The fabric must be genuinely waterproof — the closure cannot save a pack whose material wets through. The seams must be sealed — the taped construction that closes the stitch holes, the real leak points of waterproof packs. The fold length matters — a pack with too little top cannot make the full seal. The clip quality carries the closure under load — a clip that slips under a full pack releases the seal.
