Tarp Shelter Guide: A-Frame, Lean-To and Pole Setups
A tarp is the lightest shelter there is — and the most versatile. Here are the main pitches, the fabric to specify, and how buyers source tarps.
Tarp Shelter Guide: A-Frame, Lean-To and Pole Setups
A tarp shelter is the lightest, cheapest and most versatile shelter a camper can carry: one sheet of coated fabric that becomes a tent, a sunshade, a ground sheet and a gear cover. This guide covers the main pitches, the fabric to specify and the wholesale picture. For the full shelter category, see our camping shelters guide.
Why a Tarp
A tarp wins on three counts. It is lighter than any tent of the same coverage. It is more versatile — the same tarp is a shelter one day and a sunshade the next. And it is cheaper, which makes it the ideal entry shelter and the backup every kit should carry.
The trade is exposure. A tarp has no floor and no bug net, so it protects from rain and wind but not from ground water or insects. That is why many campers carry a tarp alongside a tent — the tarp for daytime shade and the tent for the night. Our connectable heavy duty tarp shelter and ultralight forest tarp cover the group and ultralight ends.
The Main Pitches
The pitch decides how much weather the tarp sheds and how much skill it needs.
Each pitch suits different terrain. A buyer's product page and guide should show the pitches, because the tarp buyer is often learning the skill as much as buying the product.
Fabrics and Waterproofing
Tarp fabric is chosen for weight against durability. Ripstop nylon and polyester with a PU or silicone coating are the standard; silicone-coated nylon (silnylon) is the ultralight favorite for its strength-to-weight. The hydrostatic head decides water resistance, and the grommets, guy-out points and reinforced corners decide how the tarp survives wind.
The QC points a buyer checks are the coating, the seam sealing, the grommet and tie-out reinforcement and the corner stitching. A tarp fails at the tie-out points first, so those are the first thing to test on a sample.
Sizing
Tarp size follows the use. A solo camper wants roughly 2.5 × 3 m for an A-frame; a two-person shelter needs around 3 × 3 m; group and basecamp tarps run larger, and connectable tarps link to cover more ground. Matching the size to the pitch and the number of sleepers is the buyer's spec decision.
Sourcing Tarps Wholesale
Tarps are a value, high-reorder category: cheap to ship, easy to store and steady in demand across camping and preparedness channels. The sourcing questions are the fabric and coating spec, the seam and tie-out reinforcement, and the grommet quality — all sample-verifiable. Factory-direct MOQ is typically 300-500 pieces per model, with OEM/ODM for custom sizes, colours and camo patterns through our tents and tarps range.
FAQ
What size tarp do I need for a shelter?
About 2.5 × 3 m for a solo A-frame, 3 × 3 m for a two-person shelter, and larger or connectable tarps for groups and basecamps. Match the size to the pitch and the number of sleepers.
Is a tarp shelter as good as a tent?
A tarp is lighter, cheaper and more versatile but leaves the user exposed to ground water and insects. For dry, sheltered conditions a tarp is excellent; for wet ground or bug pressure, a tent is the safer choice.
What is the best tarp fabric?
Ripstop nylon or polyester with a PU or silicone coating. Silicone-coated nylon (silnylon) is the ultralight favourite for its strength-to-weight ratio; PU-coated polyester is the durable value option.
How do I pitch an A-frame tarp shelter?
Run a ridge line between two trees or poles, drape the tarp over it, and peg the corners to the ground so both sides slope outward. The A-frame is the classic all-weather pitch and the easiest to learn.
What is the MOQ for wholesale tarps?
Factory-direct MOQ is typically 300-500 pieces per model for stock designs, and higher for custom sizes or camo patterns. Samples take 7-10 days.
